ワシントン州東南部の町。町の南を流れるコロンビア河を挟んで、南はオレゴン州に接している。乾燥地帯だが、コロンビア河の支流に恵まれ果樹栽培がさかん。玉ねぎの一大産地で、全米で最大の玉ねぎの支給地である。特にワラワラスイートオニオンと呼ばれる品種は、水分が90％を占め、非常にやわらかく甘い。ワラワラはワインでも有名で多くのワイナリーがこの地にある。兵庫県篠山市の姉妹都市。
ワラワラは過去20年間でワイン産業の革命がおこった。アメリカで味の良いワインを生産しているワラワラはすぐに世界中のワイン通を魅了し始めた。いくつかのワイナリーはワイン出版物である、”Wine Spectator”,” The Wine Advocate and Wine and Spirits”,” L'Ecole 41”や出版物のパイオニアである” Woodward Canyon and Leonetti Cellar”から最高点を取っている。近年では、100以上のワイナリーと、産業を支えているワイン店がある。
ところが、ワラワラ谷でぶどうを作ることは、冬の間に寒さで木が枯れてしまうというリスクを負っている。2004年には75％のぶどうの木が谷で枯れてしまったことがあり、ワラワラのワイン産業はこうした苦境を克服しながら、世界においしいワインと届けている。
市民図書館はワラワラ市の中でも人気のある観光名所です。毎年14万5千人が訪問する。
ワシントン州最大の刑務所はワラワラ市にある。1887年に始まり、現在は拡大計画が進んでいる。刑務所は大きくなり、職員は2倍に増える予定。
Spring Release Weekend
新作ワインの試飲会。ワイン製造者は新しいワインとその特別な製造過程を紹介する。来客者はまずその場で味を楽しみ、家に持ち帰ってまた楽しむ。ほとんどのワインはワイナリーを訪れるか、試飲ルームに行かないと出会えない。
Vintage Walla Walla (June)
ヴィンテージワラワラは年に１度のワラワラワイナリーのアートを祝うイベント。そこでは現在のワインと同様に、ワイン製造者が家から持ってきた宝石のようなワインも参加する。
Holiday Barrel Tasting (December)
この年に１回のイベントはお祭りの気分の中で、製造者者と売り手が貯蔵樽から将来リリースされるサンプルを持ってくる。彼らの本当の心得として、ワイナリーはそれぞれ独特な方法、例えばアート、音楽、調理法を使って、提供する。

Walla Walla has experienced an explosion in its wine industry over the last two decades. Producing some of the finest American wines, Walla Walla is quickly becoming a destination for wine connoisseurs the world over. Several of the wineries have received top scores from wine publications such as Wine Spectator, The Wine Advocate and Wine and Spirits. L'Ecole 41, Woodward Canyon and Leonetti Cellar were the pioneers starting in the 1970s and 1980s. Today there are over 100 wineries in the Walla Walla Valley and a host of shops catering to the wine industry. The wineries generate over $100 million (US)
One challenge to growing grapes in Walla Walla Valley is the risk of a
killing freeze during the winter. In 2004, about 75% of the wine grape
crop destroyed in the valley.
Spring Release Weekend
The first releases of a new vintage are the highlights of this weekend. The Valley's winemakers are on hand to introduce their new wines and share the creative winemaking process. Visitors can be the first to enjoy the new vintage and take home a selection of wines, many of which can be found only by visiting the wineries and tasting rooms themselves.

Vintage Walla Walla is an exclusive annual tasting event celebrating the art of our Walla Walla Valley wineries. Vintage Walla Walla features wines of the present as well as gems from the past that our winemakers have pulled from their own private cellars.
Holiday Barrel Tasting (December)
This annual event is certain to inspire your holiday spirit. Amidst the festive atmosphere of the season, winemakers and cellar staffs provide samples of future releases straight from the barrel. New releases often include the barrel samples you tasted at the prior year's event. In the true spirit of the Valley, each winery participates in its own unique way offering a variety of features including art, music, culinaria and more.
The Walla Walla Public Library is one of the most visited institutions in the City of Walla Walla. It averages over 145,000 visits per year.
The largest prison in Washington is the Washington State Penitentiary located in Walla Walla. Originally opened in 1887, it now houses about 2000 offenders. In addition, there are about 1000 staff members. In 2005, the financial benefit to the local economy was estimated to be about $55 million through salaries, medical services, utilities, and local purchases. Washington is a death penalty state, and occasional executions take place at the state pen, though the last execution took place in 2001. The penitentiary is undergoing an extensive expansion project that will increase the prison population to 2,500 violent offenders and double the staff size.
