アメリカ・ワシントン州シアトルから東へ約500km、シアトルに次ぐワシントン州第２の都市。ワシントン州東部から隣のアイダホにかけて は、樹木の生えない乾燥地帯であるが、スポーケンだけは、砂漠のオアシスのように広大な地域が樹木で覆われている。それは琵琶湖ほどの
地下湖があるからで、霧が多いのもその蒸発が理由。ここでは、まちの中心部にスポーケン川が流れ、自然環境に恵まれた美しいまち。スポ ーケンの市名は、アメリカ先住民の言葉で「太陽の子どもたち」を意味する。
西宮市と同様に大学のまちでもある。1990年、武庫川女子大学がスポーケン市に分校を設立し、毎年数多くの学生がスポーケン・キャンパス で学んでいる。60以上の公園があり、マニト・パークはその代表格で、バラ園などのほか、西宮とスポーケンの友好のしるしである「西宮日本庭園」がある。1974年の万博の跡地であるリバーフロント・パークは広さ20ヘクタールの緑地で、のんびり散歩が楽しめる市民の憩いの場
となっている。また、地域には76の湖、4つの大きな川、13のスキー場、32のゴルフ場があり、様々なアウトドアスポーツを楽しむことがで きる。
大きなお祭りとしては、5月に開かれる「ライラック祭り」、毎年5万人以上が参加するマラソンレース「ブルームズデイ・ラン」などがある 。
Bloomsday (May)
ワシントン州でも世界でも最も大きいマラソン大会のひとつ。毎年50,000人以上のランナーがスポケーンに集合し12キロのコースを走る。
Lilac Festival (May)
1938年からあるスポケーンの春祭り。ライラック祭りは最も伝統的で、ノースウェストの家族が主体となって春を祝う。このフェスティバル のパレードは、高校生や大学生のドリルバンド、各種団体のフロート、市長などのオープンカー、クラシックカーなどが行進し、7人のライ
ラックプリンセス達も参加する。
Art Fest (June)
アメリカ北西部で主要なアートフェスティバルで、アーティストはハンドクラフトのセラミックやガラスや宝石、木など様々なものをテント の中で展示する。そこで流れる音楽も食事もすばらしく、子供がその場で作った作品から次の世代のアーティスト発掘する試みも行っている
。
Hoopfest (June)
ワシントン州最大の３オン３バスケットボールのトーナメントイベント。年齢、能力に関わらず、「わーわー」と完成をあげる数千人の観客 者に囲まれてプレーする。このイベントは運動競技の祭典として、またフェアプレイ精神とコミュニティ活性化のために行われる。
Pigout In The Park (Labor Day weekend in Riverfront Park)
スポーケン毎年１回行われるイベントで、５０のレストランが２５０種類以上のメニューをすべて$7.95以下で提供する。75以上のバンドが
ブルーグラスやブルース、ロックまでと様々なジャンルで会場を盛り上げる。モットーは“決して食べ尽くせない”と“まず試して、音楽を
聴こう”である。

The City of Spokane is home to some 195,500 residents; there are around
418,000 residents in the metropolitan area. Spokane is located in the heart
of the Inland Northwest, and it serves as a shopping, entertainment, and
medical hub for an area that includes Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon,
North Idaho, Western Montana, and southern portions of Alberta and British
Columbia. The Spokane River runs through our downtown with spectacular
falls on the western end of our city core. Beautiful Riverfront Park also
is in the heart of our city.

Bloomsday (May)
Spokane Bloomsday, a premier 12k run, is one of the country's biggest road
races and is one of the largest timed running events in the world. Each
year this city rite-of-spring event attracts over 50,000 devotes to the
streets of Spokane. Run and join us!
Lilac Festival (May)
Since 1938 the city has held a spring celebration to showcase spring lilacs
and new growth. From parades to breakfasts, to garden tours and park events,
it is a festive spring time in Spokane. The Spokane Lilac Festival remains
the premier heritage event and largest form of free family oriented entertainment
in the Inland Northwest.
Art Fest (June)
Art Fest has become one of the Pacific Northwest's premier arts festivals.
Juried artists offering the handcrafted wonders of ceramics, glass, jewelry,
wood, fiber and fine art gather under tents to form a village of art for
3 fabulous days. Complement this with great food booths and an outstanding
selection of live music. There are hands-on creative activities for children
that can bring instant delight and possibly even inspire that next generation
of artists.
Hoopfest (June)
When the Spokane Hoopfest Association puts on a fest, everyone hoops! Rightly
so as this is the nation’s largest 3-on-3 street basketball tournament!
All ages and abilities play while crowds of thousands cheer. Hoopfest transcends
basketball through the celebration of athleticism, fair play and community
involvement.
Pigout In The Park (Labor Day weekend in Riverfront Park)
Pigout In The Park is Spokane’s annual event that features 50 restaurant booths serving over 250 menu items. Besides a
plethora of taste selections the entrees are easy on the wallet as they are all less than $7.95. Over 75 bands will be
performing everything from Bluegrass and Blues to Rock, Reggae and Barbershop. Their motto is “You’ll never eat it all!”
and closely followed by “Just try and hear it all!”
Spokane Interstate Fair (Held first Friday after Labor day)
Spokane County's Interstate Fair is a ten-day event celebrating the creativity of the hand and the land! There is allot of
mooing, oinking, crowing and horsing around followed closely by giant vegetables, gorgeous flowers and better than fair food.
Crafts abound, vegetables rule and animals compete for the 28,000 ribbons and trophies that are awarded to deserving entrees.
A carnival offers personal thrills and the rodeo provides spectator excitement. Fairs are as American as apple pie, don’t
miss this fine fall fair time!
